Graphic Overlays
A Graphic Overlay is the top layer of a product for decorative and functional purposes. It is the primary surface that the customer views when using a product for the first time.
It's the term most commonly used currently. Unlike nameplates and faceplates, graphic overlays are usually attached as a functional front piece to the product. The technical definition of a graphic overlay is the layer that contains the printed graphics and other features such as the display window, LED windows, embossed buttons, etc. Membrane switch graphic overlays are typically printed using .006”to .010” thick polyester film but can also be made from polycarbonate and polycarbonate blend films in the same thickness range.
We have also heard our customers refer to graphic overlays as a functional user interface panel or a control panel overlay.
