Materials for Graphic Overlays
1. Polycarbonate Overlays (PC)
Polycarbonate is naturally transparent and useful when impact resistance and transparency are required. PC overlays are easy to die cut, screen print, and apply texture to. If the environment is subject to chemicals, hard coat protection is available. Polycarbonate has very good heat resistance and can be combined with flame retardant materials if the product will be subjected to heat. Polycarbonate is hands down the best material when it comes to impact resistance.
2. Polyester Overlays (Polyethylene terephthalate) (PETE or PET)
Polyester is the most commonly used plastic in the world because of its use in the textile industry as fibers for clothing. Thirty percent of the PET market is plastic consumer bottles. PET has good chemical resistance and can be used in applications where the product is subject to chemicals, cleaning agents, and harsh environments. Polyester is typically used for industrial, medical and safety graphic overlays.
3. Acrylic Overlays (Polymethylmethacrylate) (PMMA)
Acrylic is another common plastic. It's popular because it is clear and light weight. Acrylic is more transparent than glass and is roughly 50 percent lighter. Many companies choose to use acrylic because it is strong and does not bend easily. It makes stiff and durable signs or displays, and is the best choice for diffusing/transmitting light.
