Membrane switch is also called Touch Keypad, it utilizes PET, PC, FPC and other flexible materials and screen printing technology, which is an entirely sealed plastic electronic product that combines graphics, keys, signs, conductivity, and switch function.

Membrane Switch Features

We are professional at designing and manufacturing membrane switches and can add to your membrane product features such as:

  • Tactile response with embossing and metal domes

  • Surface mounted elements such as LEDs

  • Detailed graphic overlays

  • Water-resistant NEMA4 designs

  • Chemical and scratch resistant coatings

  • Anti-glare and deadfront windows

  • A wide variety of connection options (housings, PCB direct...)

  • 3M mounting adhesives

  • Rigid mounting layers such as laser-cut polycarbonate

Membrane Switch Construction

A typical membrane switch is made up of the following layers:

  • Graphic Overlay - the graphics layer is what the end user sees and interacts with. Typically printed on polyester (PET), the graphic layer has keys printed on it that line up with the circuit layers below. Features such as embossed keys, windows for LCDs/LEDs and mounting holes can be integrated into your design.

  • Adhesive/Filler Layer - the graphic layer and circuit layer are laminated together using a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) layer. If your circuit layer is relatively small compared to the overall size of your membrane switch, the adhesive layer can act as low-cost filler layer with a cutout to house the circuit layer.

  • Upper Circuit Layer / Dome Trap - the upper circuit layer will consist of silver ink and dielectric ink that is screen printed onto polyester. If metal domes are used to improve tactile response, they will be added to this layer along with a "dome trap" that holds the domes in place.

  • Spacer - the spacer layer is typically made from PSA with cutouts at all of the button locations. The spacer layer keeps the top and bottom circuit layers apart so that they do not make contact until the user presses on one or more buttons. When a button is pressed the upper circuit layer compresses and creates contact with the bottom circuit layer to create a closed circuit.

  • Bottom Circuit Layer - similar to the upper circuit layer, the bottom circuit layer is made from silver and dielectric ink that is printed onto PET.

  • Mounting Adhesive - the mounting adhesive is used to mount the membrane switch to your product.

Type of membrane switch:
Main types: There are many different types and layouts of membrane switch, its basic function like travel, operating force, life time mainly depend on type of key and material.

Statistics of Membrane switch keypad

Electrical qualities

Circuit resistance: 50Ohms +

Current:  ≤100mA

Max voltage: 50VDC

Mechanical qualities

Travel:  0.4~1.0mm

Life cycle: >1 million times

Operating temperature: -20℃~+70℃

The main types of membrane switch keyboard:
Membrane switch with flat keys, membrane switch with embossed keys
(rectangle or dome), membrane switch with metal dome or polydome,
Tactile or non-tactile, membrane switch with LCD window or embedded
LED, and so on...

According to the tactile feeling, membrane switch panel can be classified to 3 types:

  • Metal dome keypad: It has metal domes inside, with contacts above them, the electric loop is generated by finger operating.

  • Polydome keypad: Poly dome is an embossed dome in the circuitry layer of membrane switch, it is quite durable, and the travel is a little shorter than metal dome keypad.

In some applications, the polydome can be processed in top overlay layer, this reduces numbers of layer.

Operating force is influenced by material thickness, diameter and height of the keys.

  • Non-tactile keypad:

No tactile feeling, for non-tactile membrane switch, it generally utilizes other way to show what the Keys' status       is.

We manufacture complete line of membrane switches, our experienced design team are ready to work with you to design membrane switches to meet your unique needs of your project.

1) Graphic overlay with or without embossing.
2) Tactile with metal dome or polydome or non-tactile
3) Embedded LED or other surface mount components.
4) Waterproof or UV resistant.
5) Electroluminescent backlighting.
6) ESD shielding (Aluminum foil or whole layer with silver and carbon coated).
7) Tail with or without connector (male or female pin).
